So today was my first day at work at the bus barn. I have to leave for my afternoon route in about an hour and it’s probably going to be as chaotic and crazy as this morning’s run, which is pretty normal for the first few weeks of school.
What’s NOT normal is that (pending confirmation from dispatch) half my route is cancelled for the first week (maybe longer, we don’t know) of school due to the school we’re supposed to drop them off at (one of two new middle schools which has been under construction for a little over a year now) isn’t even finished yet. Rumor has it that when the school shut down in March, they ALSO shut down construction on the new middle school and didn’t re-start work on it until June so they’re WAY behind.
There was also the rumor floating around that we’re supposed to hear TODAY whether or not the entire district is going to be closed down due to COVID when we were supposed to start school TOMORROW.
It is JUST like this district to wait until the last damned minute to pull a stunt like this. So it doesn’t surprise me AT all. What are all the parents who were expecting their kids to go to school and afterschool care tomorrow going to do at t he last damn minute? I don’t know but I’m sure there will be a huge yelling about it on FB and other social media. That much I DO know.
Personally, based on what I’ve seen from the district and from paying attention to local and national news, I don’t think it’s safe to reopen yet but the schools are going ahead anyway because (again supposedly) they won’t get federal funding if they don’t.
It’s a mess, that’s for sure. And it will change the way we view education FOREVER.
Probably.
Pass the tequila.
