Disney Animated Films Mega-Watch: Melody Time took me down

Melody Time took me down, y’all. It’s another one of those compilation ‘films’ that is made up of short vignettes set to music that may or may not have live action sequences as well.

And it broke me. I got through about three quarters of it, got to the Pecos Bill sequence with Roy Rogers, Trigger, Bobby Driscoll (who’d been in Song of the South and several other Disney movies) and the singing group Sons Of The Pioneers and I just COULD NOT EVEN.

I like music. No..scratch that. I LOVE music. And I liked Make Mine Music, Saludos Amigos and The Three Caballeros, which are all compilation films as well, just like this one.

But OH GOD..this was so BORING. This was the kind of movie that, in high school, I would’ve called a make-out movie. Because it was exactly the kind of boring film you’d sneak off to at the dollar movies, not giving a crap whether or not it was actually GOOD because the entire reason for you BEING there in the first place was not to watch a movie, but to make out and get handsy with your boyfriend while out of the eye and earshot of your parents.

This poster is a LIE.

The poster I found online makes it seem like Melody Time would be another “Donald Duck learns about music and culture.” movie, much in the vein of Saludos, Amigos and The Three Caballeros. But it’s NOT. It’s about as boring as you can get. Well..except for that moment in the Johnny Appleseed vignette that introduces (for a minute anyway) a chipmunk who might or might not have had a LOT of influence on Chip (one half of the Chip and Dale chipmunk duo that’s been popular for years and even had their own show in the 90s called Chip and Dale: Rescue Rangers which was dope as hell to young teenage me).

Look at that chipmunk and tell me you don’t totally see Chip the chipmunk from Chip and Dale in his face. LOOK AT HIM! He’s TOTALLY proto-Chip!

I’m sure somebody…SOMEWHERE…actually likes this movie.
